He has contributed to projects for the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council, and recorded a two-hour music documentary for Japan Broadcasting.
Born in Cherokee, Swain County, North Carolina, he learned music at an early age from his mother and her family.
His music was strongly influenced by the pickings of the great guitarist Earl Scruggs.
