A French-American novelist known for his experimental style, he published such novels and memoirs as Double or Nothing, To Whom It May Concern, and My Body in Nine Parts. He also published ten volumes of poetry and several works of literary criticism.
After graduating from Columbia University, he completed his graduate studies at the University of California-Los Angeles.
All of his novels have been adapted into radio plays in Germany.
He was born in Montrouge, France, and he later immigrated to the United States. He married Erica Hubscher in 1960.
He was a distinguished Samuel Beckett scholar.
