Bengali singer and actress who appeared in the film The Namesake. She also founded the Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958.
She was one of the first child students at the Uday Shankar Cultural Centre in Almora.
Her Bengali version of the song "We Shall Overcome," recorded during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence, became one of the best-selling Bengali records of all time.
Her mother, Sati Devi, was also a singer. She was married to Kishore Kumar from 1951 until 1958. She later married Arup Guhathakurta in 1958 until 2004. She had three children.
She recorded the song "Puroskare Sommane" as a tribute to the late and great director Satyajit Ray.
