Country music singer who was the leader of the popular music group, The Carter Family, in the 1920s and 1930s.
She was born to William Sevier Dougherty and Nancy Elizabeth Kilgore and began singing at an early age before debuting with the Carter Family in 1927.
She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970.
She was married to A.P. Carter from 1915 until 1939 and they had three children: Gladys, Janette, and Joe.
