He began figure skating at age 7. He became a winner of the junior national championship in Switzerland in 1998 and 1999.
In 2006, he won the Olympic silver medal for figure skating. On March 9, 2010, he announced his retirement from competition.
He was raised in Saxon, Switzerland alongside his sister Silvia and brother Christophe.
He competed against Evgeni Plushenko, who won the men's singles figure skating gold medal, at the 2006 Olympics.
