British cardiac surgeon who completed the first successful heart transplant in British history in 1979. He has served as President of institutions like the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was knighted in 1991.
He worked as a diamond driller in Rhodesia before studying Mining Engineering at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg.
He has earned Lifetime Achievement awards from several organizations, including the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. His autobiography is titled Follow Your Star – From Mining to Heart Transplants.
He married his second wife Judith in 2002.
