Republican politician who became a Senator from Oklahoma in 2004 after serving several terms in the US House of Representatives. Despite being from opposite parties he teamed up with then-Senator Barack Obama to make federal spending more transparent.
He got an accounting degree from Oklahoma State and went to work for the family company.
He was one of the few medical doctors in Congress when he was elected in 2005.
He married Carolyn Denton, a former Miss Oklahoma winner. They had three daughters together.
Although they were opposites ideologically, he liked and respected Barack Obama from the days they were in the Senate together.
