Before Fame
He had an interest in cooking from a young age. He cooked his cooking his first dish when he was 9 years old, which was stir-fried Chinese broccoli with garlic paste. He and his family moved to New York when he was 14, where he began working in the kitchen of his uncle's restaurant. He attended Eastern Michigan University but dropped out to focus on developing his restaurants.
