She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in broadcast journalism. She then wrote for local and network news stations for 15 years following her college graduation.
She has also served as a TV and film writer, writing for such shows as Mad Men and The United States of Tara. In 2010, she had her memoir, I Love You and I'm Leaving You Anyway, published.
She was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In May 2014, she appeared alongside Oprah on her daytime self-help talk show Super Soul Sunday.
