About

Economist who gained acclaim as the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at Princeton University. Known for his work on economic and social development, he won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Before Fame

He earned a Bachelor of Science from the London School of Economics in 1936. He earned his PhD from the school in 1940. 

Trivia

His 1954 article Economic Development with Unlimited Supplies of Labour introduced what would become known as The Lewis Model on growing economies in developing countries.  His portrait is featured on the East Caribbean $100 bill.

Family Life

He had two children with his wife Gladys.

He was a lifelong friend of Trinidad and Tobago's first Prime Minister Eric Williams.
