Heart surgeon and teacher who was appointed to the Canadian senate in 1990. He founded the University of Ottawa Heart Institute at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
He received a Bachelor of Science from St. Patrick's College and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Ottawa.
In 1986, he became the first Canadian doctor to implant an artificial heart into a human being.
He had children named Claudia, Ryan, and Neil with Anne Jennings, whom he married in 1960.
He was appointed to the Senate on the advice of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
