About

American businessman and member of the famous Vanderbilt Family. In 1899 he inherited more than 40 million dollars following his father's death. He was involved in multiple scandals during his lifetime. He died saving another female passenger while onboard the RMS Lusitania, which a German U-boat took down in 1915.

Before Fame

He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and then studied at Yale University. He first worked as a clerk in the offices of the New York Central Railroad.

Trivia

He was a member of the secret society Skull and Bones while he attended Yale. He enjoyed fox hunting.

Family Life

He was the son of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and Alice Claypoole Gwynne. He married Ellen "Elsie" Tuck French in 1901. The couple later got divorced and he remarried Margaret Mary Emerson. In total, he had three sons, William Henry Vanderbilt III, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt Jr., and George Washington Vanderbilt III.

Historians initially believed he had a ticket booked for the Titantic, but it was actually his relative George Washington Vanderbilt II, the son of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
