Champion boxer became a household name in his native Puerto Rico for his ten straight wins to defend his world championship.
Turning professional in 1970, he reeled off a series of notable wins over Frankie Otero, Carlos Mendoza and Kuniaki Shibata, the latter winning him his championship.
One of his favorite stunts was to bring a live boa constrictor into the ring with him; he would let it slither around the ring for a bit, to agitate his opponents.
He was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
He eventually lost his title to Alexis Arguello, suffering in the process a cut tongue and a chipped tooth, as well as a gash above his eye; the fight became known as the "The Bloody Battle of Bayamon".
