American composer and conductor of vocal and choral music. She recorded numerous albums, including And Glory Shone and O Sing the Glories, with a vocal group called The Musicians of Melodious Accord.
She composed her first orchestra during her high school years and went on to study music at Smith College and the Juilliard School.
She wrote and published several books on musical technique, including a 2006 work entitled The Anatomy of Melody.
She grew up in Boston and later settled in western Massachusetts.
She and her musical contemporary, Benjamin Britten, both composed acclaimed choral works.
