Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, from 2009 to 2013 who became the 17th United States Secretary of Transportation in 2013.
He earned his law degree from New York University School of Law in 1996 before being elected to the Charlotte City Council in 2005.
He was only Charlotte's second African American mayor and the Senate confirmed his nomination for Secretary of Transportation by a vote of 100-0.
He had two children with his wife Samara Ryder.
He was appointed US Secretary of Transportation by President Barack Obama.
