American author, feminist, and social activist whose real name was Gloria Jean Watkins. She wrote "Ain't I a Woman?: Black Women and Feminism". She wrote over 40 published books throughout her long career.
She studied at Stanford University and then earned her M.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Her writing dealt with race, capitalism, gender, oppression, and class domination. She has written multiple children's books.
She grew up in a working-class family with five sisters and one brother.
She and Julie Burchill are both well known feminist authors.
