He grew up loving storytelling, and he says in an interview that his inspiration comes from "childhood nights, sitting around a campfire in Rocks Pond, South Carolina, hearing emotional storytellers share unforgettable tales. The ones that jump into the story and pull you in for the ride." He bases his filmmaking on how he felt hearing those childhood stories, and gained fame for making diverse films that tell stories.
