Iconic Mexican guitarist known for fusing Latin sounds with rock as the leader of the band Santana. He's considered the Latin artist with the most record sales in history. His best known songs include "María María," "Smooth," "Corazón Espinado" and "Black Magic Woman."
He began playing the guitar when he was eight and turned down an opportunity to attend Humboldt State University to pursue a career in music.
His celebrated 2000 album Supernatural won eight Grammys including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. He performed with his band at Woodstock 1969 before releasing his debut album.
He married Deborah Santana on April 21, 1973 and, after their divorce in 2007, he married Cindy Blackman on December 19, 2010. He has a son named Salvador and two daughters named Angelica and Stella.
He collaborated with Maná on "Corazón Espinado" and with Rob Thomas on "Smooth."
