English journalist and folk writer who was considered a major player in the rise of Christian Socialism. He published a collection of folk songs, which were influential in the first British folk revival.
He began writing for the Pall Mall Gazette and later became the editor of the Christian Socialist monthly newspaper.
He joined the Fabian Society in 1885 and remained a member until 1913.
He married Chloe Byrne in 1890, and they had a son and a daughter.
