Oscar winner and three-term president of the NRA who starred in Planet of the Apes and Ben Hur. Appearing in over 100 films throughout his 6-decade career, he is perhaps best known for his role as Moses in The Ten Commandments.

Before Fame

While growing up in Michigan, he spent much of his free time wandering throughout the woods and pretending he was characters from his favorite books. After serving in the army during World War II, he moved to New York and was employed as an artist's model.


He starred as Brad Braden in the 1952 Cecil B. DeMille drama The Greatest Show on Earth.

Family Life

He married actress Lydia Clarke in March 1944, and their marriage lasted sixty-four years. His son Fraser was born in 1955 and his daughter Holly Ann was born in 1961.

He starred with Roddy McDowall in 1968 science fiction film Planet of the Apes.
