Politician from Latvia who served as the 11th Latvian president. He also served as the minister of foreign affairs and head of the chancery of the president of Latvia, as state secretary of the Ministry of Defense, among other political roles. He has been the first openly gay political head of state in the European Union. 

Before Fame

He was born in Jūrmala, Latvia. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Latvia in History and Philosophy. He became a journalist and reported on topics like international policy and foreign relations on Latvian radio stations.

Trivia

He received his first master's degree in political science in 1997 and a second master's degree in 2000. 

Family Life

He used his Twitter profile to publicly announce that he was gay in November 2014.
