American attorney and federal judge. From 1880 to 1888, he served on the United States District Court for Texas' Western District.
He began his legal career as a Michigan-based prosecutor. He later opened a law office in Austin, Texas.
He served from 1867 to 1870 as Texas State Attorney General.
He was born and raised in Putney, Vermont. After studying and practicing law in Michigan, he settled permanently in Texas.
He was appointed to the United States District Court by nineteenth U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes.
