She earned a B.A. from the University of California, Davis, before getting her law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law in 1976.
She was shot five times during the November 1978 fact-finding mission to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by the Reverend Jim Jones and his Peoples Temple followers, which led to the mass suicide of over 900 of the Temple's members.
She has two children with her first husband Steve, who died in 1994.
She endorsed Hillary Clinton for President in 2008.
