American Republican-turned-Democratic politician who held office as Mayor of New York City from 1966 to 1973. Earlier in his career, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives.
After graduating from Yale University, he served in the United States Navy during World War II.
During his time as mayor, he dealt with substantial civic unrest, facing transit workers', teachers', and sanitation workers' strikes.
He was married to Mary Anne Harrison from 1949 until his death in 2000.
He ran against William F. Buckley Jr. for Mayor of New York.
