When he was growing up he began the worldwide letter-writing program known as Children for Avi. He majored in political science at the University of Rochester. During his time working on Capitol Hill, he earned a JD from Georgetown University Law School. He played basketball in high school.

His father was a pediatrician and his mother was a teacher. He married his high school sweetheart Lori in 1997, and the couple has four children.
