Best known as the older sibling of Olympic silver and bronze medal-winning figure skater Michelle Kwan, she also had a career as a competitive ice skater, winning the 1995 Pacific Coast Championship and placing fifth in the United States Championship that same year.
During their childhood years in California, she and her sister Michelle were both coached by Frank Carroll.
After ending her figure skating career in the late 1990s, she enrolled in the communications program at Boston University.
Her marriage to fellow skater Peter Oppegard resulted in two daughters: Olivia and Sophia.
After graduating from college, she completed an internship with fashion designer Vera Wang, a distant relative and the designer of many of Michelle Kwan's ice skating outfits.
