Nicknamed "The Gnome of Essex", Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1974, captained Essex from 1974 to 1985 and in 1988.
He made his Essex debut at age seventeen and made his English debut in 1968.
He was part of the English squad that played in the 1975 Cricket World Cup.
His parents took refuge with relatives after being bombed out of their London home in 1942.
He and Alastair Cook have both captained England in Test play.
