Austrian politician and diplomat who served as 4th Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1972 to 1981. He also served as President of Austria from 1986 to 1992.
He studied at the Vienna Consular Academy and joined the the National Socialist German Students' League in 1938.
When he was running for President, his service as an intelligence officer in the Wehrmacht during World War II came to light and created controversy.
He was married to Elisabeth Ritschel from 1944 to his death in 2007 and they had three children together.
