American poet, author, and literary critic known for The Life of the Dead, A Trojan Ending, Under the Mind's Watch, and other works. A modernist writer, she is associated with the Tennessee-based Fugitive group of poets.

Before Fame

She was born Laura Reichenthal and was the daughter of Austrian-Jewish immigrants. Remaining in her home state of New York throughout her college years, she studied at Cornell University.
