She began singing professionally at age 24 and attended New York University.
She has won several Latin Grammy awards, including Best New Artist and Best Música Popular Brasileira Slbum for Maria Rita (2003) and Segundo (2005).
She is the daughter of famed Brazilian musicians Elis Regina and Cesar Camargo Mariano. In 2011, she married musician Davi Moraes, with whom she has a daughter named Alice. She was previously married to film director Marcus Baldini, with whom she has a son named Antonio.
She is the namesake of family friend Rita Lee.
