Known for such non-fiction works as The Last Voyage of Columbus; Into Africa: The Dramatic Retelling of the Stanley-Livingstone Story; and To Be a Runner: How Racing Up Mountains, Running with the Bulls, or Just Taking on a 5-K Makes You a Better Person (and the World a Better Place), Dugard also penned a screenplay titled A Warrior's Heart.
In the early years of his career, he published essays in Sports Illustrated, GQ, and other prominent publications.
In the early 2000s, he began coaching the track and cross country teams at California's JSerra High School.
A native of Maine, he later settled in Rancho Santa Margarita, California with his wife and three children.
He and political commentator Bill O'Reilly co-wrote several historical works, including Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever and Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot.
