Japanese video game designer who is best known for being the creator of the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series. He is also the director of the software development for Sora Ltd which he created and founded in 2005.
He first earned recognition as a designer working for the HAL Laboratory. At the age of 19, he created and directed his first title Kirby's Dream Land. With pressure for sequels and restrained creative freedom, he left HAL to work with Q Entertainment before forming his own company Sora in 2005.
He is known for having provided the voice for King Dedede in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards as well as in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He also directed games such as Kid Icarus: Uprising and Meteos.
He was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. His wife Michiko Sakurai collaborates with him as a graphical user interface on a range of his games.
He has worked with and collaborated with Satoru Iwata at the HAL Laboratories.
