He was recognized in the jazz community during the sixties for his albums Strawberry Wine from 1966 and Summer Night from 1967.
He was honored with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 22nd Annual San Diego Music Awards.
His family was living in San Antonio when he was born, but they relocated to San Diego soon after.
He also gained a solid reputation for his non-jazz session work, especially on John Lennon's Rock 'n' Roll from 1975.
