Vietnamese writer who is known especially for her 2003 work, The Book of Salt. She published a second novel, Bitter in the Mouth, in 2010.
She graduated from Yale University in 1990 with a degree in English.
She won the 2004 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for The Book of Salt.
She was born in Saigon, Vietnam. When she was six years old, she left Vietnam as a war refugee and settled in Houston, Texas. She later lived in New York City.
She and Robert Stern both graduated from Yale University.
