Military leader and strategist for the Southern Bloc of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. While in Ecuador, he was killed by members of the National Army of Colombia, an event that resulted in a 2008 diplomatic crisis among Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
Before Fame
At the age of sixteen, he became a member of the Colombian Communist Youth. He later became a local official in the Colombian Communist Party and eventually joined the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army's (FARC's) Secretariat.
Trivia
Both the Colombian government and the U.S. State Department held Reyes responsible for FARC's expansion of drug trafficking in South America.
Family Life
He grew up in the town of La Plata in Colombia's Huila Department.
Associated With
Rafael Correa, then the President of Ecuador, declared Reyes' murder to be in opposition to Ecuadorian airspace rules.
