Before Fame
He earned degrees in English and communications from Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. His first novel, The Crystal Shard (part of the Icewind Dale Trilogy), was published in the late 1980s.

He and his six siblings grew up in Leominster, Massachusetts. He later married Diane Salvatore.
