Indian-American poet, translator, and teacher who became known for White Elephants, World Hotel, and other poetry collections. She was the 1996 recipient of the Barnard Women Poets Prize.
She studied at Wellesley College and the University of Virginia before teaching at the College of William and Mary.
She committed suicide in 2003 after murdering her toddler son.
