Remembered for such popular children's books as Make Way For Ducklings, Time of Wonder, and Blueberries for Sal, this famous writer and illustrator earned the prestigious Caldecott Medal in both 1942 and 1957.

Before Fame

Before writing and illustrating his first children's work, Lentil, he trained at both the Vesper George Art School in Boston and the National Academy of Design in New York.

Trivia

The Russian translations of his Homer Price children's books were very popular among 1970s Soviet readers.

Family Life

He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and later settled in Deer Isle, Maine. His marriage to Peggy Durand resulted in daughters named Jane and Sally.

Associated With

He collaborated with fellow artist Charles Dana Gibson on the illustrations for author Bob Davis' 1942 children's book, Tree Toad: Adventures of the Kid Brother.
