She was born to kabuki actor Matsumoto Kōshirō IX and businesswoman Noriko Fujima, and she debuted in theater when she was 16 years old.

Trivia

She has won multiple awards, including the Hochi Film Award in the Best Actress category and Japan Academy Prize in 2004 for her role in the film The Hidden Blade.

She married guitarist Yoshiyuki Sahashi in 2007.
