Before Fame
He attended high school at Irving MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas before transferring to the Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. While attending Irving MacArthur, he averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists as a senior. There he was named co-Most Valuable Player of District 6-5A.
Trivia
On December 9, 2017 he scored a collegiate career-high 20 points against the Wichita State Shockers. In that game, he shot 5-for-10 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line.

He was born in Irving, Texas, where he lived with his parents Aretha Rogers and Terry Shine. He has two older siblings, including an older brother named Terry and an older sister named De'Untra.

During a January 20, 2018 matchup between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the University of Oklahoma Sooners, he was tasked with the responsibility of guarding the Sooners' freshman guard Trae Young, the eventual winner of the the Big 12's Freshman of the Year.
