Australian stand-up comedian, writer, television host, radio broadcaster, and podcaster known for hosting the television shows Gruen (originally The Gruen Transfer), Question Everything, and The Glass House along with being known for his stand-up comedy tours such as Wilful Misconduct, Man vs Wil, Wilarious, Wiluminati, Free Wil, Fire at Wil, Critically Wil, and Wilogical. He is also known for appearing on television programs including Good News Week, Spicks and Specks, The Project, Have You Been Paying Attention?, and Taskmaster Australia.
Before fame
He attended Gippsland Grammar School before enrolling at the University of Canberra where he studied newspaper journalism and graduated top of his class in 1995. He initially planned to pursue a career in journalism. He began performing comedy in the mid-1990s and made one of his earliest television appearances in 1996 as a guest comedian on the program Under Melbourne Tonight. His major breakthrough came when he became the co-host of triple j's breakfast radio program alongside Adam Spencer from 2000 to 2004. He achieved even greater fame when he began cohosting the ABC comedy panel show The Glass House from 2001 to 2006. He hosted the satirical advertising series Gruen beginning in 2008 when the show debuted as The Gruen Transfer. He created and hosted the ABC panel show Question Everything beginning in 2021.
Trivia
He won the Helpmann Award for Best Comedy Performer in 2010 for his stand-up show Wilful Misconduct. He has won the Melbourne International Comedy Festival People's Choice Award six times which is more than any other comedian in the festival's history as of 2026. He launched the comedy podcast TOFOP (Thirty Odd Foot of Pod) with comedian Charlie Clausen in 2010 and continued creating additional podcasts including FOFOP, Wilosophy, and 2 Guys 1 Cup. He is also an author and has written books including Survival of the Dumbest, Friendly Fire, and I Am NOT Fine, Thanks.
Family life
He was born William James Anderson. He was in Sale, Victoria, Australia, and grew up on a dairy farm near Heyfield, Victoria, Australia. He is the cousin of former Australian rules football player Stuart Anderson.
