Stock fairy tale archetype who began appearing in traditional folktales to rescue the damsel in distress. He has appeared in a range of tales including those of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Shrek 2.

Trivia

One of the earliest references to the character was in Charles Perrault's 1697 version of Sleeping Beauty. He has made appearances in more modern fairy tales such as Into the Woods and Once Upon a Time.
