Member of the National Republican Alliance who held office as the President of El Salvador from 1989 to 1994. He played an instrumental role in ending the Salvadoran Civil War in 1992.
He earned a degree in Business Administration from D.C.'s Georgetown University.
He was accused of human rights violations in 2008 for his possible involvement in the massacre of the murdered scholars of UCA during the civil war.
He got married to Margarita Llach in 1970; the couple has three adult children.
