Southpaw who became a WBO, NABF, and USBA Light Welterweight champion. He turned professional in 2001, winning his first fight via TKO over Felix Flores.
He was an excellent amateur, winning the National Golden Gloves Light Welterweight Championship in 1995.
He designed much of his own boxing attire.
He took time off from boxing to recover from the death of his brother in 2002.
He lost his WBO World Light Welterweight title to Miguel Cotto on February 26, 2005.
