Pianist and orchestral conductor known for his Grammy Award-winning recording of composer Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring suite. He conducted both the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz.
He trained at the renowned Juilliard School in New York City and subsequently directed the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota.
He frequently collaborated with jazz musician and fellow pianist Keith Jarrett.
He was born in Toledo, Ohio, and he later lived in New York City, Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Stuttgart, Germany.
During the 1980s, while associated with the Baden-Wurttemberg State Opera House, he conducted two operas by modern composer Philip Glass.
