Famous for his two-decade-long portrayal of Bob Cryer on the popular ITV police series The Bill, Richard is also known for his appearances on Holby City; Open All Hours; and Made in Britain.
Early in his career, he acted in two episodes of BBC2 Playhouse.
A stage performer as well as a screen actor, he appeared in productions at the Birmingham Repertory Theater, the Royal Court Theatre, and the Sheffield Crucible Theatre.
His first marriage resulted in a son named Richard; his second marriage was to Tina Smith. Tragically, his infant grandson, Charlie, was killed in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.
He and Christopher Ellison both appeared on The Bill during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.
