Co-wrote the children's classic book Mr. Poppers Penguins with her husband Richard Atwater. The book was not accepted for publication in its first two attempts, however, following Richard's stroke, she revised the story and the rest is history.
She studied French Literature at the University of Chicago and worked for The Chicago Literary Monthly as a co-editor.
She wrote for publications such as The New Yorker and The Atlantic.
She married Richard Atwater in 1921 and was with him until he departed in 1948. They had two children Doris and Carroll.
Jim Carrey starred in the film adaptation of Mr. Popper's Penguins in 2011.
