A Bangladeshi anti-establishment writer, he was a recipient of the prestigious Bangla Academy Award. He published more than seventy works of fiction, poetry, young adult fiction, and criticism.
He earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh in 1976.
He received the Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh's top civilian honor.
He and his wife, Latifa Kohinoor, had three children: Mouli, Smrita, and Ananya.
