European monarch best known for having become the first monarch to rule both England and Scotland, officially uniting the crowns in 1603 following the death of Queen Elizabeth I. He is also widely recognized for commissioning the King James Bible, which is known for being the most influential translation in the English-speaking world.
Before Fame
He was the only son born to Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. He became King of Scotland when he was only 13 months old after his mother was forced to abdicate.
Trivia
He developed a substantial interest in witchcraft, and, in 1597, he authored a book on the topic called Daemonologie. In 1605, he survived a failed assassination attempt led by Guy Fawkes called the Gunpowder Plot.
Family Life
In 1589, he married Anne of Denmark. Together, they had several children including Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Charles, who later became King Charles I.
