Before Fame
He pursued acting as a teenager and had a recurring role on the CBS drama The Fitzpatricks. He toured for three years with his sister in the Driftwood Band, worked briefly in the oil fields, and then signed with Dimension Records. His debut single "Charleston Cotton Mill" entered Hot Country Songs in 1981. He continued releasing music throughout the 1980s and 1999s, with "Trains Make Me Lonesome" finding commercial success in 1988.
Trivia
He almost died after he picked up a hitchhiker who shot him and left him for dead. He drove 15 miles while wounded until a 13-year-old girl found him help. He ultimately recovered after additional surgeries for infection.
Family Life
His father is country music icon Merle Haggard. He spent part of his childhood raised by his grandmother in a converted railroad boxcar before he moved in with his father when he was twelve years old. He has three children.
